Relief Care Provider

Respite Care Providers (RCP) are licensed foster parents who temporarily care for foster children to give other licensed foster parents a break. 
This page is dedicated to provide all the information you need to become a RCP for a current DePelchin foster family and current RCPs.

Training Information for Respite Care Providers

Relief Care Providers must be enrolled to complete the required DFPS training and will need to contact reliefcare@depelchin.org for information and instructions.

We use an outside resource for CPR and First Aid called, HOPEcpr. Please email hopecprtx@gmail.com to register for CPR and 1st Aid classes. In your email, please include the names of participant(s), our agency name, and list your location (Austin, Houston, Lubbock, or San Antonio). After your email is sent, you will receive the Zoom link. There is no charge to foster parents for classes with HOPEcpr. Relief Care Providers (RCPs) will be charged $30.

In-Person “Classroom” training will resume and be required beginning October 1st, 2024

IMPORTANT: If you choose to use an outside source other than HOPEcpr:

  • Per minimum standards, it cannot be an “online” class.
  • We can accept “blended classes” where you do some training online and then meet with an instructor in person.
  • It must be Infant, Child, and Adult training OR Pediatric CPR.

  1. Your name on your certificates must be your legal name. We can no longer accept nicknames, initials, or misspellings.
  2. If your DFPS Portal training is expired by 1 day, DFPS might suspend your account and you will need to contact the DFPS Helpdesk for it to be unlocked. Please make sure to complete this training BEFORE it expires.
  3. DFPS Training Portal: Each RCP needs to register using a separate email address.

Types of Relief Care Providers

As a Short-Term Relief Care Provider, you are able to care for children in foster care up to 72 hours, including overnight. You are required to complete training annually. These include:

  • Preventing & Recognizing Youth Sexual Abuse (DFPS training)
  • Psychotropic Medication (DFPS training)
  • CPR & First Aid (good for two years)

As an Extended-Care RPC, you will be able to care for children in foster care up to 14 days, included overnight. You are required to complete training annually. These include:

  • Preventing & Recognizing Youth Sexual Abuse (DFPS training)
  • Psychotropic Medication (DFPS training)
  • De-Escalation & EBI
  • CPR & First Aid (good for two years)
