Positive Action

DePelchin Children’s Center understands the importance of character development and partners with schools to help students make positive life choices. Positive Action is offered to students in grades 4th-12th.

Positive Action is a systematic educational program that promotes an interest in learning and encourages cooperation among students. It works by teaching and reinforcing the philosophy that you feel good about yourself when you engage in positive activities. The effects of the program range from increased academic achievement to reductions in problem behaviors. These results have been replicated in diverse settings. For more than 30 years, Positive Action has been helping to create a positive learning environment for students.

Eligibility Criteria

Positive Action is a free program for elementary, middle and high school students attending schools outside of the Houston Independent School District (HISD), specifically for students in grades 4th-12th.

Program Components

The evidence-based program is composed of seven to ten individual sessions. Each session is approximately 45 minutes in length and offers students the opportunity to participate individually and as a group.

Cost

This grant funded program will utilize the evidence-based curriculum Positive Action to provide prevention education and character development to students in grades 4th-12th.  Positive Action is built around the philosophy that positive actions lead to feeling good, and the curriculum focuses on improving student’s academic, behavior and character with age-appropriate lessons and activities at each stage of the program. DePelchin offers Positive Action at no charge to schools. The program is covered by funding through the Department of State Health Services.
