HOUSTON (November 1, 2017) – DePelchin Children’s Center is bringing awareness to National Adoption Month this November as locally in Texas there are more than 3,900 children awaiting adoption from foster care in Texas. These are children not living with a family or adult who intends to adopt them as of September 2017 according to the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS).
“DePelchin works with families in our Austin, Houston, Lubbock and San Antonio offices to license them through our foster care adoption program and find loving homes for children in foster care,” said Jenifer Jarriel, DePelchin president and CEO. “While adopting from foster care can seem overwhelming, DePelchin is there for our families every step of the way from the initial orientation to finalization and beyond through our post-adoption program.”
To adopt a child from foster care there are minimal requirements: you must be 21 years of age, be in good physical health and be able to financially provide for a child. While there are many myths, you do not need to own a home, be married or be rich to adopt. In fiscal year 2017 there were 5,395 children adopted from DFPS and by raising awareness of National Adoption Month we can hopefully increase that number even more in the future.
