December, 2016 – HOUSTON, Texas – In the United States, there are currently more than 400,000 children living in foster care. DePelchin Children’s Center’s approach to caring for children integrates prevention, foster care, adoption and post-adoption programs to improve the mental health and physical well-being of children who are at risk of entering or are in the State’s child welfare system. Today, DePelchin Children’s Center received a helping hand from mattress retailer Mattress Firm and the Ticket to Dream Foundation with a $50,000 donation.
“DePelchin Children’s Center is honored to have been chosen to receive these funds from Mattress Firm and the Ticket to Dream Foundation,” said Jenifer Jarriel, DePelchin President and CEO. “These funds will go a long way in supporting initiatives to improve the mental health and physical well-being of the children in foster care and the families who care for them every day.”
The donation from Mattress Firm and the Ticket to Dream Foundation will be used to provide services such as trauma-informed training for foster parents and in-home coaching and counseling to help children heal from past abuse and neglect. DePelchin provides an array of mental health and other support services, tailoring them to the unique needs of each child who enters foster care and helping children reach their full potential. Funds for the donation were raised during a Mattress Firm fundraiser benefitting the Ticket to Dream foundation, an organization that supports foster children nationwide. The event raised $1.2 million to fund therapeutic programs and emergency placement services that provide foster kids with mental health support and comfort during a difficult time.
“When a foster child enters foster care, it can be scary. They often leave home with just the clothes on their backs or a few items in a trash bag,” said Mauri Knowles, Community Relations Director at Mattress Firm. “We can help make this transition so much easier, while also letting kids know that their community cares.”
