HOUSTON (May 2, 2017) – DePelchin Children’s Center is celebrating 125 years of helping children and families today May 2, 2017. 125 years ago today, May 2, 1892, Kezia DePelchin founded what was then known as DePelchin Faith Home.

Kezia DePelchin took a leap of faith and accepted into her care three orphaned infants for whom no other accommodations were available. On May 2, 1892, she moved the children into a small rented house, which she christened “Faith Home” as she would rely on her faith in God and the good people of Houston to support her cause.

“We are privileged to carry on Kezia’s mission and help vulnerable children and families in our community, not just in Houston but now across the state of Texas,” said Jenifer Jarriel, DePelchin president and CEO. “As Houston’s oldest family services agency, DePelchin is deeply rooted in our city’s history and culture, connecting generation-to-generation and family-to-family through its prevention, foster care and adoption services.”

The young boys whom Kezia cared for at the house on Washington Avenue were among the first of thousands to benefit from Faith Home, now DePelchin Children’s Center. Over the years, many have attempted to chronicle the dates and events that shaped DePelchin, but its complete history is not easily put into words and can never be fully documented. It lives mainly in the memories and hearts of the children and families, who, during their darkest and happiest hours, have passed through its doors.

DePelchin will celebrate this historic milestone throughout 2017 starting with this evening’s Family Ever After birthday party honoring past Board of Directors Presidents.  The anniversary activities will also include a Family Day fall festival for DePelchin families, staff and community supporters.  For more information visit:  www.depelchin.org
