Developmentally Appropriate Play and Setting Limits in Play Therapy

When engaging a child in Play Therapy it is important to have knowledge and understanding of what is appropriate play for the child’s developmental stage, as will be discussed during this class.  The participants will have an opportunity to practice this understanding through the use of developmental scenarios. 

Additionally, this class will cover the concept of Limit Setting in Play Therapy, as well as the unique relationship between the Play Therapist and child.

An opportunity to observe a Play Therapy demonstration will also be provided.


At the conclusion of this class the participants will be able demonstrate by large group discussion an understanding of:

  1. The importance of knowing the concepts of developmentally appropriate play when engaged in Play Therapy
  2.  The importance of restating content of the child’s verbalization and behaviors during Play therapy sessions, as evidenced by participation in small group practice
  3. The importance of reflecting the child’s feelings during Play Therapy sessions, as evidenced by participation in small group practice
