DePelchin Children's Center Launches Campaign to Heal Young Minds

HOUSTON (May 1, 2014) – DePelchin Children’s Center is proud to announce the launch of a new campaign to "Heal Young Minds," bringing awareness to the thousands of children and families in our community struggling with mental health issues.

“One in five children in the Greater Houston area is affected by these disorders, including ADHD, depression and anxiety,” said Dr. Oscar Bukstein, DePelchin's medical director. “Not only do these children and their families have to deal with the actual disorder, but they also have to deal with the stigma that is associated with mental health issues. And that hurts even more.”

DePelchin believes that it’s time for Houston to start talking about mental health in children and begin a healing process by removing the fear and misunderstandings people have about disorders of the brain. To begin the conversation, DePelchin is asking members of the community to make one simple gesture in support of children’s mental health awareness: wear a band-aid on their forehead on Friday May 16, 2014, which will be proclaimed by the City of Houston as Children’s Mental Health Houston Day.

“We chose a green band-aid for the Heal Young Minds campaign to symbolize the connection between healing and mental health,” said Jenifer Jarriel, DePelchin's president and CEO. “Our goal is to ignite a conversation about children’s mental health so that struggling children and families can get the help they need.”

People can request an official Heal Young Minds band-aid and learn more about the campaign and children’s mental health by visiting To help drive awareness, people are asked to upload pictures of themselves wearing their band-aids with #healyoungminds to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

DePelchin has enlisted numerous community partners, including Discovery Green, the Houston Zoo, Houstonia Magazine, Culture Map and Jaguar Houston Central to support the campaign and invest in children’s mental health.

“Houstonia is very proud to support the Heal Young Minds campaign and help DePelchin raise awareness of children’s mental health, an issue too often ignored. May 16 marks the start of what we hope will be a long partnership with DePelchin Children’s Center as together we start a much-needed conversation on an issue of growing concern,” said Nicole Vogel, Houstonia president and founder.

A press event will be held at DePelchin’s main campus (100 Sandman St.) at 9:30 a.m. on May 16, 2014. More information about the campaign can be found at
