Post-Adoption Services

Adoption is a life-long commitment that affects the entire family in many ways. The Post-Adoption staff at DePelchin Children’s Center is here to help and support adopted children and their families.

DePelchin supports adoptive families by providing a wide range of post-adoption services:

Casework and Service Planning
Case managers listen to the needs of the adopted child, the adoptive family and/or the birthparents and determine the best way to help and support them. They then assist in accessing the services that are needed.

Counseling and Consultation

DePelchin clinicians are sensitive to the unique issues of adoptive families and provide individual and family therapy as needed. Counseling, consultation and referral services are available to the adoptive parent, biological parent and adopted child and are not limited to children placed by DePelchin.

Parent and Family Life Education
Special classes provide opportunities for the parents to learn about and discuss pertinent adoption issues.

Support Groups
Usually the best support comes from adoptive families or children who have experienced the same situations and overcome the same problems. Support groups offer a means for open discussion on a variety of issues.

Respite Care
In some cases adoptive parents may be eligible for assistance to pay for someone to care for their children in their home to give the parents a break. Adoptive children may also be able to go to a weekend camp or summer camp that is just for adopted children.

Residential Placement Services
When other treatments such as counseling have been exhausted, the child or teen may need more intensive treatment in a 24-hour residential treatment setting until they can be returned to their home.

Information and Referral
If DePelchin cannot provide the services the family needs, they will refer them to someone who can.

24-hour Crisis Intervention
Because a crisis doesn’t always happen during normal working hours, DePelchin offers 24-hour support service for those situations that just cannot wait.

Fun Days
Fun days give the whole family an opportunity to de-stress, play games, enjoy a meal and get to know other adoptive families. There are separate activities for toddlers, young children, teens and parents as well as joint parent-child activities over the course of the day.

Weekend Retreat for Parents
Clinicians equip couples with effective tools for managing and understanding issues unique to adoptive families.  Retreats are weekend-long and are available for adoptive parents. Using a fun and engaging format, our trained facilitators offer the PREP (Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program) curriculum to parents. Topics include: communication, intimacy, stability and conflict management. Child care (respite) reimbursement is also offered for eligible families.

Fees
Some Post-Adoption services require a fee that are based on the time and services provided and are determined on an individual case basis.
