Hospital Stay: child Q: My 10-year-old son is going into the hospital. How can I help him be less scared about it? A: Like adults, children are comforted and reassured by understanding what is happening. You and the doctor should take the time to explain to him what is wrong and why it happened. Make sure he understands that this is not his fault. Also explain what is planned to fix the problem, how long it will take to get better, and what he can do to help himself heal. Let him know that the doctors and nurses are all there to help him get well. Working with the medical team, make sure you understand the subject yourself so you can answer his questions as they come up. Encourage him to ask questions of you or the doctor. These may come to him now or later. Always tell him the truth. If you find something concerning his problem that is reassuring, explain it to him or let him read it for himself. Let him know that someone, you, your spouse or a close relative, will always be there to take care of him. Let him pick a few things from his room to bring to the hospital to comfort him. Remain strong through this so he doesn't see your fear and get scared himself. Most important of all, show your love and affection. |
