DEPELCHIN EXPANDS PROGRAMS FOR HOUSTON AREA FAMILIES GOING THROUGH DIVORCE
New Classes Provide Children and Parents with Coping Tools

HOUSTON (February 19, 2008) –DePelchin Children’s Center will begin offering two new classes for parents and children facing the separation of a family. A program specifically designed for children will be added to the existing Saturday adult class titled, “Helping Children Cope with the Effects of Divorce” at DePelchin’s Memorial campus. In addition, a new four-week course for parents will provide long-term coping and planning tools to help families proactively manage the divorce process and guard their children from potentially negative effects.

Children suffer most from the dissolution of a family,” said Curtis C. Mooney, Ph.D., president and CEO of DePelchin Children’s Center. Expanding these programs helps us reach deeper into the issues facing the children and help the parents deal with issues they will see further down the road.”

The new children’s program provides an opportunity for children to engage in age-appropriate activities such as games and art projects, while processing their feelings about divorce and learning important coping strategies. The program is open to all children ages 6 to 18, whose parents are enrolled in the Saturday class at DePelchin’s Memorial campus.

In addition to the children’s class, DePelchin is expanding its programs for divorcing parents. The new four-week course is for parents who desire more in-depth strategies to parenting children of a divided household. The adult counseling program is available at many of the DePelchin locations across Houston.

“There are so many issues to cover when it comes to divorce. We are finding that families need additional help in dealing with deeper issues,” said Jennipher Cole, program coordinator at DePelchin Children’s Center. “The new course provides added discussion and information for those parents, and is a perfect compliment to what is covered in the four-hour Helping Children Cope with the Effects of Divorce class.”

These courses are approved and meet the requirements by the family courts in Harris and surrounding counties. For additional information on registration, or to locate the nearest DePelchin facility, please visit www.depelchin.org or call (713) 730-2335.
