School Based Services Alarming Statistics In 2001 approximately 38% of students nationwide reported feeling unsafe at school due to increases in school violence. The state of Texas was ranked the second highest in the nation for teen pregnancy and Harris County has some of the highest rates in the state of births to young women under the age of 19 years. The rates of truancy and school drop out continue at alarming rates in the Texas school system. Houston area school districts are faced with continued funding issues while presented with increased needs of students and their families with social and emotional support and education to help decrease and prevent school violence, teen pregnancy, and juvenile delinquency. Services Offered The Prevention Department’s School Based Services offer education, counseling, and support services in partnership with area school districts to address a variety of social and emotional issues that may affect a student’s ability to succeed. Baby, Think It Over and No Kidding are examples of the many programs offered by DePelchin's Prevention Department. These programs are designed to give adolescents a realistic perspective on teen pregnancy and parenting. School Based Teen Parent Services The School Based Teen Parent Services programs seek to prevent primary and secondary adolescent pregnancy. DePelchin staff offers education and support to pregnant teens to encourage proper prenatal care and promote healthy pregnancy outcomes. The program also empowers parenting teens to provide a safe and nurturing environment for their children while completing their education and building toward a future of financial and physical independence. Services to At-Risk Youth The Services to At-Risk Youth programs provide school age youth, their families, and school staff education, counseling, guidance, and support to facilitate success both in and out of the classroom. The services are designed to help facilitate increased social and emotional coping skills, decrease violent behaviors, increase school attendance, and increase family functioning. Program staff works with students, parents, teachers, and school administrators to encourage a nurturing environment for students to succeed in school and in their future. |
