“Traumatized Youth: Snapshots of the Chronically Ill and Other High Risk Youth – A Medical Perspective”

Thursday, February 24, 2011
12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

DePelchin Children’s Center

About the Topic

Today’s at-risk youth face many challenges.  Violence characterizes the lives of too many children and for some chronic illness tragically compounds traumatic experiences.  Today our panel will offer a medical perspective on the issues facing HIV positive youth as well as  incarcerated youth affected by violence, and they will discuss the overarching themes common for both groups, including loneliness, isolation, and limited services and support.

Speakers
Gloria Heresi, MD, MS and Laura Benjamins, MD, MPH

The University of Texas Medical School at Houston

Gloria Heresi, M.D., M.S. is Professor of Pediatrics, and Interim Division Director of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.  Laura Benjamins, M.D., M.P.H. is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.  In the course of providing health care to children and teens that are HIV positive, Drs. Heresi and Benjamins have handled many cases involving compound trauma including child neglect, chronic poverty, and life threatening illness.  Dr. Benjamins also works at the Juvenile Justice Center where she encounters similar themes resulting from exposure to violence.  Together, they seek innovative and multi-disciplinary approaches to extend care and services for these children.
