Meet Jessica  Couch-hopping with three young children in tow is how 24-year-old Jessica began her life in Houston. At risk for a life of homelessness and poverty, the future of her young family was gravely uncertain. Pregnant for the first time at 15, odds stacked against her, Jessica worked diligently with her heart set on high school graduation day. But, just after achieving her graduation goal, Jessica found herself pregnant again. Two short years later, her third child was on the way. As a young mother, Jessica was always able to count on the support of her own single mother. One volatile argument changed everything. Unexpectedly, Jessica’s mother and her boyfriend up and left their shared apartment, abandoning Jessica to foot the bills she couldn’t afford. Homeless at twenty, it wasn’t just herself that Jessica had to worry about. That’s when DePelchin’s Transitional Living Program found Jessica and turned her life around. DePelchin’s unique program provides the basics to young homeless families while they establish stability and focus on goals for their future. Jessica spent 18 months learning parenting skills, budgeting techniques, and completing trade school. Equipped with tools for success, Jessica ventured out, hoping to forge a new path and ‘make it on her own.’ Boy, has she! Now a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Jessica has been steadily employed for more than a year. And, Jessica’s road to success doesn’t end there. Hoping one day to attend law school, Jessica has enrolled at a local community college where she will receive an associate’s degree in Law Management and become a paralegal. Overwhelmed with a ‘sense of pride and freedom,’ Jessica knows her future is no longer uncertain. Join us in transforming grave uncertainties into successful tomorrows.
