Social Thinking Academy

The Social Thinking Academy provides a group therapy approach to teaching appropriate social thinking skills to children who have high-functioning autism and Asperger Syndrome.  This program is based on the work of Michelle Garcia Winner and her curriculum Think Social! A Social Thinking Curriculum for School-aged Students.  Additionally, the professionals working with these students draw from their own areas of expertise such as psychology, counseling, and education.

About our groups:

  • Groups are available for children ages 8-10 and 11-13.  The students are grouped based on age as well as their social cognitive strengths and weaknesses.  Each group consists of 3-5 students.
  • Each session lasts an hour and a half.  The first 15 minutes is spent outlining the schedule for the day and reviewing concepts from the previous session, followed by 45 minutes of teaching new social thinking skills.  Students  practice these new skills for the remaining 30 minutes of the session.
  • Parents receive a review sheet after each session, which updates the parents on the skills and strategies taught to the students during each session.  They are provided with information about the Social Thinking Academy curriculum, vocabulary, and ways to reinforce topics between sessions.
  • Students learn to generalize the skills they learn from the Social Thinking Academy to other environments, such as the classroom and home setting.

Topics Covered:

  • Review of expected and unexpected behavior
  • Being part of a group
  • Self-monitoring our behavior through video modeling
  • Social Behavior Mapping
  • Figuring out what people mean by what they say
  • Figuring out the meaning of language

In order to determine if your child would benefit from these groups, please contact DePelchin Autism Services to schedule an initial intake appointment. If your child is not currently eligible for these groups, we may recommend that your child attend individual sessions with a staff clinician.
