Autism Assessment FAQs

  1. How soon can I schedule an appointment?
Answer: Recognizing that early diagnosis and intervention improves outcomes, DePelchin Autism Services is committed to providing prompt appointments for new families. We do not require a doctor’s referral; families can contact us directly to make a first appointment. Evaluations are typically scheduled within four weeks of initial contact. To schedule a first appointment, please call 713.730.2335

  2. How soon can you complete an evaluation?
Answer: The evaluation process varies among clients. For children 18 months to six years of age, the evaluation process requires only three sessions: an intake appointment, evaluation and feedback session. For children seven years of age and older, we are able to administer more standardized testing, so the evaluation process may require multiple sessions. Once we complete the evaluation, we are able to schedule a feedback session within two to three weeks of the last evaluation. During the feedback session, families will receive a draft of the written report, which includes results, recommendations and referrals. The final report will be mailed to families.

  3. Do you accept insurance for your evaluations?
Answer: DePelchin Autism Services is currently not accepting private insurance; however we do offer private-pay options. Upon completion of an evaluation and receipt of payment, we will provide families with a coded invoice that outlines the fee for services, tests administered, CPT codes and diagnostic codes, which they can submit to their insurance company. If a family plans to file for reimbursement, we strongly encourage them to contact their insurance company before they schedule their first appointment with us.

  4. How do you diagnose an autism spectrum disorder?
Answer: We gather information from parents about a child’s developmental history, review previous testing, conduct behavioral observations and administer multiple assessment measures, such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), which is the gold standard for diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders across age, developmental level and language skills.

  5. What is the benefit of receiving a diagnostic evaluation?
Answer: A diagnostic evaluation not only provides parents with peace of mind, but it also provides a clear picture of a child’s current level of functioning.  With a current diagnostic evaluation, a family will receive a detailed report, which may include recommendations pertaining to academics, communication and language, social skills, daily living skills and managing behavior.

  6. Do you offer treatment after evaluations?
Answer: In addition to providing diagnostic evaluations, DePelchin offers a range of therapeutic and educational services to support the entire family. Learn more about DePelchin Autism Services.
